SONG
BIRD

A Reggae label; part of the Trojan group. Song
Bird started out in 1969 and just about lasted into 1973. Its
singles were numbered in an SB-1000 catalogue series; numbers reached
SB-1086 but several of them were not used. The majority of the singles were Derrick
Harriott productions. The label design remained basically the same throughout, but couple of
issues towards the end of the label's life lost the colour; the example shown
comes by courtesy of Robert Bowes. The text 'Made in England' appeared on
records from SBs 1054 to 1068 but was dropped from 1069
onwards. Pressing of the few singles that I have seen in the vinyl has
been by Orlake, the firm that was usually responsible for manufacturing records
on Trojan's subsidiary labels - if you're checking your singles look out for
plus signs separating the parts of the matrix numbers in the run-off, as in
'SB+1072+A'. The rough appearance of the label's surface, with a thin
smooth outer ring, is also a sign that you may be looking at an Orlake
product.
