WAND (WN prefix)
American, out of New York; a
subsidiary of Florence Greenberg's 'Scepter' label. Scepter / Wand
lasted from 1961 to 1976 in the States, at which point Greenberg
retired. It had several successes in its native land, notably with
the Shirelles, Dionne Warwick and B. J. Thomas. Most of Wand's hits
were licensed to other companies in Britain, but the Wand label in its own right
appeared on these shores c.1970, through Decca. Its first single, B.
J. Thomas's 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' (WN-1), was a minor hit over
here in 1970, but that was as good as it got. By 1973 the label seems
to have retreated back to the USA.
