REFLECTION
The record label of independent
record production company AMP - 'Artists Musical Productions' - which was
run by Andrew Cameron Miller, John Hawkins, Tony Hall and Jim
Carter Fea, the latter being the manager of the Reflection club ('Record Retailer',
26th March 1969). Reflection's early product appeared on the
CBS label during 1969, but 'RR' of the 4th of October said that the intention
was for it to become a fully fledged label, responsible for its own promotion, by
March of the following year. Sure enough, Reflection duly
assumed its own label identity in the Spring of 1970, by
which point 'RR' was describing it as '...the recording arm of
Proclaim Records, a holding company covering all aspects of show business' ('RR',
11th April). The first single was due out that week, and some of the
CBS LPs were to be reissued on Reflection, starting at the end of May. 'RR'
of the 29th of August said that the company was operating from
Keith Prowse's offices, at 117B Fulham Road, London SW3; it also stated that
RS-1 and RS-2 were due out on the 4th of September, so either those records were being
re-promoted or there had been a delay of some kind. Until February 1971
distribution was by BIRD, an association of independents including H.R Taylor,
Keith Prowse and Clyde Factors. At that point Reflection signed a manufacture and distribution
deal with Pye; according to 'RR' (6th February) Keith Prowse
would still be giving the label additional coverage in the South East. A forthcoming
move to 11 Albemarle St, W1 was mentioned in 'RR' of the
8th of May. Then in 'RR' of the 10th of July came the news that Cameron Miller
had recently sold his shares in the company to Ian
Brown. 'Billboard' (17th July) added that he was on the point of forming
a new company, 'Dove', with David Lewis, writer / singer with the band
Andwella. As part of the deal he became a major stockholder in
Brown's new label, Revival (q.v.). Revival issued records until
c.1974, but the Reflection label seems to have been shelved not long after
Cameron Miller's departure.
Reflection issued a
fairly eclectic mixture of material, ranging from the Heavy Rock of Dogfeet
to the vocal harmonies of the Unauthorised Version. Stuart Damon,
vocalist on the single pictured above, was one of the stars of TV show, 'The
Champions'. Singles were numbered in an RS-0 series, which became HRS-0
after the move to Pye - the 'RS' prefix was already being used by Reprise,
another Pye-distributed label, which may perhaps have prompted the change.
As well as an altered prefix the last few records had an altered label
colouring, dark brown on cream instead of silver on black (2).
Demo copies of the black labelled singles had a silver central 'A'; those of the
cream labelled ones had one or two handstamped 'A's (3). None of the records on either
sort of Reflection are met with all that often, nowadays. There was
another Reflection label around from 1968-c.75, which had a different logo and
specialized in contemporary Christian music; it doesn't appear to have had
any connection with this company, and as its only 7" records came out in the
1960s it doesn't qualify for a page on this site. See also 'Acclaim' and
'Patheway'.
