NUMBER ONE
A DIY or small independent label, apparently a
one-off. The only Number One record that I have been able to
trace is a single, 'All I Ask Of You' b/w 'Your A Lady' by Tony Barton; I'd
imagined it to be a self-financed recording by a Club / Cabaret
entertainer, but while it is indeed MOR male vocal Pop there's a proper
orchestra on it and it sounds more accomplished than DIY records usually
do. Its catalogue number was TB-001. There's no year
on the label, but it has a typical '1970s custom pressing' appearance, being basic, functional and monochrome and having the
name at the top in a plain font; versions of both sides were hits in 1972, the 'A'
for Sonny & Cher, the 'B' for its writer, Peter
Skellern, which at least gives us a
'not before' date. If I had to take a guess at the year
of issue I'd say 1974 or thereabouts - producer Guy Darrell released records from the mid '60s
until the mid '70s, so he was certainly musically active around that
time. Pressing of the single was by Pye.
