NATIONAL THEATRE

The record label of the National Theatre, oddly enough.  The Theatre seems to have put out just the one record under its own banner: an EP of four songs from the 1977 production of Ben Jonson's 'Volpone', with music by Harrison Birtwistle.  In addition to the tracks shown on the scan above, the EP offered 'Fools Are The Only Nation', sung by John-Angelo Massana, Imogen Claire and David Rappaport, and 'Had Old Hippocrates', sung by David Rappaport and Ben Kingsley.  Its catalogue number, NT-77/2, may refer to the date when the tracks were recorded, as the production opened in April 1977.  Songs and music from previous and subsequent productions appear to have come out on other record labels, 'Lark Rise To Candleford' on Charisma (CDS-4020; 1979), and 'Hiawatha' on MMT (MMTLP-104; 1981), to give just two examples.  The National Theatre did however put out a couple of recordings in the new millennium, on CD rather than vinyl: the original cast recordings of 'London Road' (RNT-001; 2011), and 'One Man, Two Guvnors' (RNT-002, 2011).
