M.W.B.
A doubtful one, on several
counts. For a start off, I have had to use the catalogue number
prefix 'M.W.B.' as an identifier for the label of the single shown above, 'Space
Medley' b/w 'Maltese Calypso' by the Medium Waveband (M.W.B.-001), because there
is no actual company name on the label; I don't suppose it was ever actually
referred to as 'M.W.B.'. Secondly, there's no year on the label
either; the material on the record was all around in the late '70s, so it could
date from then, but it could just as easily be from the early
'80s. And thirdly, it seems slightly odd for a song about the
drawbacks of living in Malta - which is the subject matter of the 'B' side - to
feature on a British single. Malta does not appear to have had any
pressing plants, in the '70s at least, so this could easily be a British
pressing for a cabaret group working in Malta. Be that as it may, I
thought it was an unusual enough item to merit a page on the site, pending the
arrival of any information that would positively disqualify
it. 'Space Medley' is a long, mildly funky, mostly instrumental piece
weaving together themes from 'Close Encounters', 'Star Trek', and other space
films. Googling has failed to reveal the existence of any other
Medium Waveband records.
