MIRACLE

A division of Gull Records, aimed at the Disco market.  In an article in 'Music Week' of the 5th of May 1979 Gull managing director David Howells is quoted as saying that the motivation behind the launch of Miracle the previous year had been that "No one was catering exclusively for the Disco market, and the time seemed right for a purely Disco label."  Pete Waterman agreed with him, and Miracle was born.  Gull had enjoyed some disco hits, and it was to one of them that Miracle owed its name.  Apparently someone had said of Carol Douglas's 'Night Fever' (GULS-61; 7/78) "If it's a hit it's a miracle."  The single managed to get to No. 66 in the Charts; when the new Disco label was launched the comment provided it with its name and its advertising slogan.  Miracle's first release, Two Man Sound's, 'Que Tal America' b/w 'Brazil O Brazil' (M-1; 1978) provided it with its only Chart success, just about squeezing into the Top 50.  The sharp-eyed among you may have noticed that Pete Waterman is credited with 'A & R Co-ordination' on that single.  Manufacture and distribution were by Pye, as they were for Gull at that particular time.  Catalogue numbers suggest that a dozen Miracle singles were issued, though one was only available in 12" form and another may not have reached the shops; most of the rest seem to have been available both as 7" and 12" singles, which is logical enough for a Disco label.  They came out in just under twelve months, from November 1978 to October 1979.  At least another couple were added in 1980-81, though parent company Gull seems to have been stumbling somewhat during that period.
