MELODY SCOTLAND
A small
independent concern, based in Glasgow. Online company listings indicate
that the company's name was actually Melody (Scotland), but it seems
simplest to go with what was on the label. The producers of the only three
Melody Scotland records that I have seen pictured were George and Jan Douglas,
which suggests that the company was theirs. Going by the material on the
records, it looks as though Melody Scotland may have been a custom recording
concern. The Young Faces EP shown above on the right has a 'made in
Ireland' appearance, but there were vinyl shortages every now and again in the
Seventies and quite a few small companies had pressings done in Ireland - see
Indigo for another example. The catalogue numbering system is slightly
odd: it could be a coincidence that the three records below have 36, 37 and
38 in their numbers, but it seems doubtful, and the presence of a 32 and two 33s
is again peculiar. Thre must be a logic to it all, but I'm afraid it may
take the Douglases to explain it. Thanks to Stephen Small not only for
bringing Melody Scotland to my attention but also for providing the
scans.
