MAT
The record label of H.
A. ('Mat') Mathias's 'Radio Craft' company, which appears to have specialized in custom recordings. Radio
Craft's studio was initially based in Meltham, West Yorkshire; its first
recording was an EP by the Children Of The Holme Valley & Meltham Primary
School, entitled 'Selected Items From A Music Festival' (MAT-1), which came
out in 1968. The company moved to larger premises in King Street, Huddersfield
- the King Street Recording Studio - and may perhaps have put
out a handful more records on the MAT label; the only ones that I have
been able to trace, however, were a couple of singles: 'Ah Girl' b/w 'Married' by Spunk (MAT-6),
and 'We're Gonna Have A New World Champion', by Midnight Hearse (MAT-7) - the latter was
released in 1976. That of course invites the questions, were numbers MAT-2
to MAT-5 used, and if they were, what were the records and when did they come
out? Mat himself went on to invent the Matamp amplifier and to link up
with the Orange Amplifiers company, which had its own, more prolific, label,
Orange (q.v.). Matamp is still in business today, but sadly Mat died in
1989. Thanks to Nicholas Hough for the second scan and for drawing the
label to my attention.
