MAGPIE
(IS/BB prefix)
One from Newcastle. Magpie's
only release was a single, 'Howway The Lads' b/w 'My Julie' by
The Barrie Brothers (IS/BB/1003; 1974). The Barrie Brothers were a popular act
on the local Club circuit, and 'Howway The Lads' was the official Newcastle
United 1974 F.A. Cup Final song. According to 'Music Week' of the
25th of May 30,000 copies had been sold in the first month of
release. Newcastle lost the final, at which point sales of
the single presumably nosedived. Production company Impulse, under its
director David Wood, was responsible for the disc; the IS/xx/1000 numerical
series was used for recordings made through or by Impulse
Studios and can most often be found on records on their in-house
label Wudwink (q.v.). There were at least two pressings: one was done through Deroy, another appears to
have been done by Orlake using the Deroy masters - the
marks of both companies can be found in the
run-off of the white-labelled single shown above. As can be seen, the
label came in two different colours. Thanks to Robert Bowes
for the scan of the cover, and for bringing Magpie to my attention.
