MAGNUM (GUN prefix)

A Reggae label, owned by distribution company Mojo.  Magnum received its sole mention in the Trade press in 'Music Week' of the 5th of November 1977, which stated that Mojo distribution manager Mo Claridge had set the label up and had signed an exclusive deal with Plastic Fantastic (q.v.).  Under the deal Plastic Fantastic was to market the records, with Pye handling manufacture and distribution as it did for the other labels in the Plastic Fantastic family during that period.  According to the report Magnum had already put a couple of albums out by that time.  The first single under the deal was to be numbered GUN-1001.  Magnum put out five singles in the 1977-78 period, using labels with the same design but three different colours, before evolving into Ballistic (q.v.).  'Conscious Man', by the Jolly Brothers (GUN-1002) was a Top 50 hit in 1979 when it was reissued on the Ballistic / United Artists label (UP-36415).   Thanks to Robert Bowes for the red and the yellow scans.
