MAGNET
(MA prefix)
A Reggae label, owned by Rupert A. Coke and based in
Stoke Newington. Magnet lasted from 1973-75, and
issued approximately sixty singles during its first
incarnation using several different-coloured labels in roughly the same
design. The font used and the size of the logo changed
around the time that MA-013 came
out. Catalogue numbers were in
an MA-000 series, though the first '0' was
omitted from the number occasionally, and such famous names as Keith Hudson
and Dennis Brown had singles on the label. Magnet
had a subsidiary, Faith, and was also linked
to the Dervla label (q.v. both). Under Rupert's son Newton, Magnet enjoyed a
new lease of life in the early 2000s, with a new label design but with the
numbering of the singles carrying on from where it had left
off in 1975. The appearance of the scans that I've seen suggests that Orlake was responsible
for many of the pressings. Thanks to John Timmis, who supplied scans
10 and 12, and to Robert Bowes, who supplied all the
others except the fourth and thirteenth. Thanks also to Newton Coke
for the ownership information. A few numbers are missing from the discography
below, but they appear not have been used.
