FAY
MUSIC INC.
A
London-based Reggae label, run by Winston Edwards in association with Joe
Gibbs. Fay Music Inc. was responsible for some fourteen
singles in 1974-76. It used three different label designs, but the second
type shown above is by far the commonest; the printing on it can be found in red
and in green as well as in black. Examples of all can be found on the 45cat site
. Numbering was rather haphazard: it seems
to have started out in an FM-100 series, which had changed to the FM-600s by the
time of the third single; a couple of singles
were numbered in the FM-000s, while two others had the
same number and a couple more had no numbers at all. Edwards also produced a 1974
single on the Jah Shaka label, and was behind Stop Point (q.v. both). The Jah Shaka
release, which was numbered F-1, may perhaps fill the gap between
FM-101 and FM-603. From 1975 into the '80s Fay Music operated
a record shop as well as a label; the shop was in New Cross. Thanks
to Robert Bowes for the scans, and to Mark Griffiths for the ownership and other
information.
