EVENT

An American label, from Westbrook, Maine.  Event was founded by Al Hawkes.  It operated mainly in the second half of the 1950s, though there was an occasional release after that.  It concentrated on Bluegrass and Rockabilly music, and its '50s recordings of the latter led to half a dozen of those tracks being licensed by Record Mart of the UK and pressed up in the States for release in this country, in the form of three singles.  All six were by Curtis Johnson with The Windjammers, and they came out in 1978.  The pairings were 'Baby Baby' b/w 'Teenage Love Affair' (E-4268), 'Lover Boy' b/w 'Heading For The High School Hop' (E-4281), and 'Baby Let's Play House' b/w 'I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine' (E-4287).  'Baby Baby' and its 'B' had been issued in America in 1957 with that same catalogue number, but the 1978 issues of the other four tracks appears to have been their first appearance on singles.  The logo and the yellow colour of the labels of the 1978 releases were the same as those of USA Events from the '50s but they lacked the twin horizontal black bars of the vintage American issues.  'Lover Boy' came in a sleeve with a circular stave of music on it (2).  In similar fashion Record Mart licensed and had pressed Rockabilly / Rock 'n' Roll singles from several other American labels - Glee, Antler, Dore, Yucca and Olympic (OR prefix) - around that time, in addition to putting out reissues on its own 'RM' label (q.v. all).
