ESCORT
A Reggae label. Escort was a member of the Palmer
Brothers' 'Pama' stable, alongside Bullet, Crab, New Beat, Camel, Supreme,
Punch, Ocean, Pama, Pama Supreme, Unity and Gas (q.v. all). It issued
more than 60 singles during the years 1969-71, most of which now seem to be
collectable to greater or lesser extents. None of its singles ever
threatened the Charts, but one of them, 'Young Gifted And Black' by Bob &
Marcia (ES-824; 1970), was a hit for Trojan's 'Harry J' label when it had
strings added to it - the Escort version had to be withdrawn and replaced by a
re-recorded version, presumably because of a dispute over which company had the
rights to the original. As was generally the case with Reggae singles
at the
time the 'B' sides were often
by different artists to those on the 'A'; for the simplicity's sake
I've not added them to the discography below. One label design served throughout; thanks to
John Timmis for supplying a scan.
