DERRICK
Presumably another of the many small independent Reggae
labels that came and went in the '70s. The only Derrick record that
googling reveals is the one shown above 'Babylon Trap Them'. The record
was actually by U.K. vocal group The Blackstones but at first it was credited to
'D. Brown', the record company apparently hoping to capitalize on the
popularity of Dennis Brown by using that name. After four thousand
copies had been sold the group found out about the misnaming and
complained; as a result subsequent pressings were correctly credited, to The
Blackstones. The catalogue number, DR-005, hints that there may be
other Derricks out there, but numbering of Reggae records can be
misleading; if they exist at all they may well be Jamaican rather than
British. There's no date on the label, but 1976 seems to
be the consensus on the web. Thanks to Sam Mauger for bringing
the label to my attention and for supplying the scan; thanks also to Aeon23 of
both Youtube and 45cat for the Blackstones information.
