DEN-MARK
A label which was tied
in with a series of children's books. According to Billboard of the 6th of
November 1976, President Records had launched Den-Mark to coincide with the launch of four Woolly Rhino books, written
by Annabelle Ogilvie and published by Jupiter. An album and a single were to
be released. 'Woolly Rhino Song' b/w 'Games The Rhino Play' by Woolly Rhino &
Friends duly appeared, that same month, with a catalogue number
of DN-500, but there's no trace of an album. Distribution was by
Lugton and by H. R. Taylor, and presumably by President themselves; promotional
copies were marked with a small 'A', as was the case for
many President-family labels at that time (2). Three years later a follow-up
single, 'W-oo-ll-y' b/w 'The World Filled With Colour', appeared, but
it came out on the Decca label (F-13868; 10/79). The production
company, Shambles, was the same, as was the producer, Andy Renton, who
reportedly had previous experience with bands rooted in children's literature as
an occasional member of the Wombles. In that same year Decca also put
out an album of Woolly Rhino stories, narrated by Norman Shelley (Argo,
ZDSW-729).
