CJMO
CJMO - the C. John Mears Organization - seems to have had a
penchant for unusual items, among which were fairground organ records, a
collection of favorite songs by the Ovaltineys, and an album of poetry for
children, spoken by Arthur Lowe ('Moveaboutalot', RLP-777; 1977). It looks to have
been active from the mid '70s to at least the early '80s. LPs and EPs alike
shared the same '7xx' numerical series; the first two numbers may well
indicate the year of issue. LPs were usually prefixed 'RLP' or 'PLP', though
there were exceptions; EPs, of which there appear to have been
just four, were prefixed 'CJMO R'. Distribution of CJMO records was by Lugton.
In addition to putting out its own records the
company offered a custom recording service, the products of which were
numbered in a PX-1000 series (PLP for LPs) which seems to have started at
PX-1076. Some hadn't any discrete label identity (3),
others appeared on the artists' own labels - see 'Beverley', 'Hustle', 'Sirius' and 'Neutron'
for examples. In addition CJMO produced promotional records for companies such as Alliance Cash
& Carry; these had their own 'CJMO P' prefix (4). The few
CJMO EPs I have seen in the vinyl were
manufactured by Pye, though several in the series of Alliance EPs were made through EMI and had
EMI's 'SECW-1000' numbers in addition to the 'CJM P' ones - for
some reason the actual pressing of them seems to have
been farmed out to Linguaphone. The dates on these
refer to when the material was originally
issued - the tracks were licensed from EMI by Alliance. The CJMOs from the
'70s that I have managed to track down are listed below. For the sake
of interest I've included LPs.
