BLACK GRIFFIN
One of many small independent labels from the New Wave
era. As the label indicates, Black Griffin was based in
Canterbury. It issued at least one record, a single by the Purple
Hipsters, 'Howzyasistah' (BGR-01), in 1979. I have never hear that
single but I have seen it listed under 'Punk / Ska'; make of that what you
will. The Hipsters went on to contribute two tracks to a Various
Artists LP, 'First Offence', on a bigger independent, Criminal Records
(q.v.). Whether or not any more Black Griffins were hatched remains a
mystery at the moment; if there were, they have managed to duck under Google's
radar. Thanks to Robert Bowes for the scan and for letting me know
about the label.
