ATTRIX
A comparatively
long-lived and fruitful independent
label from Brighton, founded by Rick Blair of Punk band Attrix. Attrix kicked off
in February 1978 with 'Hard Times' b/w 'Lost Lenoré', by Attrix
themselves (RB-01). Its catalogue numbers, which were
shared by its releases in all formats, reached RB-13 in 1981
before the company disappeared. RB-04, 'Coloured Music' b/w 'Jilly' was
by The Piranhas, who went on to achieve Chart success with other companies via the
maxi-singles 'Tom Hark' b/w 'Getting Beaten Up' and 'Boyfriend' (Sire, SIR-4044; 1980), which
got to the No.6 spot, and 'Zambesi' b/w 'Who Needs
You' and 'Darabukkus' (Dakota, DAK-6; 1982), which stalled at No.17. The first Attrix single had a
handstamped white label, but after that a proper design was adopted.
It came in two forms, the second (2) being a negative of the first;
RBs 06 and 07 had the 'negative' kind, the rest had
the 'positive'. Thanks to Paul Winsall for the second scan; despite
the date on the label that record came out in 1980. The
'Zig Zag Small Labels Catalogue 1978' gave Attrix's address as The Basement, 43 Buckingham
Palace, Brighton.
