ARGO TRANSACORD
Transacord was originally an independent concern,
operating out of Princes Risborough. It appears to have started out in the
1950s - the fourth scan is of a 10" LP from this era - and it looks to
have formed a close relationship with Argo Records in the early
'60s. Transacord was run by Peter Handford and was devoted to issuing
recordings of train sounds. Most of its releases seem to have come
out in the 1960s, but the EPs listed below appeared in the 1970s, thus
qualifying it for inclusion on this site. Transacord's roots as
an independent label and the fact that the records have 'AN ARGO TRANSACORD
RECORDING' on their sleeves seems to me to set them aside from
the other Argo releases to a certain extent, which is why I gave the label a
page of its own rather than lumping it in with its big brother. The
EAF / ZFA numbering was shared with other Argo releases; EAFs were mono
recordings and had blue labels, ZFAs were stereo and had blue-green
labels. Some '60s Argo EPs were issued in both forms, with the same
number but different prefixes. The final EP, ZFA-154, had a boxed
logo (3), as did re-pressings of ZFA-153. After leaving Argo, Transacord spent
some time as part of the Academy Sound and Vision group; it survives to this
day, as SPV/Transacord, and is still issuing train records. The
discography below only covers the '70s.
