ACORN
The label of the Acorn recording studio, of Stonesfield, in Oxford, which
was run by Colin Sanders. Acorn evolved from a label called
Zeus. Catalogue numbers, which were generally in the CF-200s, suggest that it was responsible for
more than eighty records between 1968 and
c.1979, most of which seem to have been of either Folk music or
Electric Organ music. The vast majority of those records were albums but
the occasional seven-incher appeared; both sizes of record shared the same
numerical series. The legend on the Tony Caspar EP shown above (2) indicates
that as well as offering recording facilities Acorn provided a tape-to-disc
service. Both of the EPs above are Decca pressings. Perhaps
Acorn's biggest claim to fame as far as records are
concerned is that it made the first two albums by Folk legends The Yetties, 'Fifty
Stone Of Loveliness' (CF-203; 1969) and 'Who's A Feard' (CF-208; 1970), but
there are several other collectables such as Oberon's 'A Midsummer's Night
Dream' (OBE LPS-1; 1970) and the self-titled album by Dragon (CF-268; 1976). The
few Acorn 7" records that I have managed to track down
are listed below. Sanders founded the Solid State Logic company in
1969; it made a big breakthrough with one of its products in 1979, and from
then on the business of designing and making mixing consoles and other recording equipment appears
to have led to the record label side of his interests being
shelved. See also 'Shy Talk'.
