UBM
A small independent
label from Selly Oak, Birmingham. UBM appears to have been responsible
for just one record, a three-track maxi-single by local band Sorahan, dating from 1975. The tracks were 'Such A Surprise', 'With His Siller In His
Hand' and 'These Blue Moments', all of which were written by keyboard player /
singer Tom Sorahan. The first was a complex Rock number and the
second nodded towards Folk Rock, while the third was a short Twenties
pastiche. The single was made through Birmingham studio Zella
(q.v.), and its catalogue number, JHEPS-169, was taken from a series used by
that company. Pressing was by Decca, as was the case with many Zella products. The record's producer was Steve Bywaters; it may be that UBM was his label. Tom Sorahan went on to make a solo album for Pye, I've
Seen The View, You Can Take Me Back Now' (NSPL-18580; 1978), but the band, which
performed regularly at The Railway, in Curzon Street, "...was killed by the
Punk tsunami," according to a comment by its last drummer, Richard Westwood, on the Birmingham Music
Archive site.
