STRAWBERRY
An uncommon label from the mid '70s. According
to 'Music
Week' of the 30th
of August 1975 Strawberry was one of a pair of labels which were
to be launched by the Vogue Choice management agency, under David Williams, the
other being VC (q.v.).
VC was to be aimed
at the MOR market, whereas Strawberry was for teen-orientated material. The
article stated that the company's aim was to concentrate on new talent,
but in the event it seems to
have issued just three singles, one of which was a re-release of Jimmy
Gilmer's 1963 hit 'Sugar Shack' (CJ-4; 4/76). The others were a couple of
Glam-flavoured singles by Philadelphia Brown, which was a group rather than the 'unknown
Soul singer' that the article claims. Numbering was in a CJ-0 series;
CJ-2 and CJ-3 are unaccounted-for and appear not to have been
used. The label was handled by President Records, and was
distributed by them via their 'Enterprise' arm and by Lugton. Thanks to John Timmis
for the second demo scan.
