ROUGE

A subsidiary of music publishing company De Wolfe.  Rouge made several singles available to the public, though whether they were intended for sale commercially or not is open to question.  The earliest of them may or may not be 'I Am A' b/w 'Very Peculiar Julia' by Plain Characters (RMS/PC-1); it has 'Recording first published 1977' on the labels but the 45cat site gives a date of January 1979 for it.  The single was described in one source as 'Prog Punk', whatever that might be, and it is reported that the writers of the songs worked for De Wolfe.  In December 1979 the band came up with a DIY label, Final Solution (q.v.), and it went on to make an album for Abtract Records in 1981.  The only other Rouge singles that googling reveals seem to have been numbered in an RMS-1110 series; they appear to date from 1978 or thereabouts.  A list of Rouge LPs can be found here.  Thanks to Sam Mauger for the scan and to Steve Mitchell for information and the link.
