RED BUS
Borderline, this one. According to 'Music Week'
of the 20th of January 1979 Red Bus was formed in 1970 and the principal movers
behind it were Eliot Cohen, Barry Murray and Ellis Elias. 'Record
Retailer' of the 23rd of
October 1971 described it as a production company, but, according to the
'MW' article, after Murray left in 1971 and was replaced by Leslie Grade it had
grown to encompass Red Bus Records (in 1972) and Red Bus Music.
It had a licensing agreement with EMI, and had provided that company
with records by Geordie and Yellowstone & Voice, among others. Its record
label first saw the light of day in April 1980, which puts it outside the
scope of this site; its singles were numbered in the RBUS-50s and it was licensed to Pye / PRT - the example shown (2) was its first release. However, two singles published by Red Bus came
out in 1979 on EMI, with a Red Bus logo; they
were numbered in an RB-100 catalogue series (1). Why they were given separate numbers but not
a separate label needs explaining. Be that as it may, I thought
that the numbers and the logo were sufficient for Red Bus to get a mention on
a site dedicated to records of the '70s; so here it
is. Incidentally I have yet to see a copy of either single without
'Demo' markings or a 'Sample Record' sticker attached to one side or the other - there's one
on the 'B' side of the first scan.
