PETAL
The label of Petal Studios, of Leeds.
Catalogue numbers suggest that Petal issued at least twenty records in
or around 1977, but I have only managed to track down three of them; it is
possible that not all of the numbers may have been used. Definitely issued
were the two singles pictured above, 'Street Fighter' by the Steve Brown Band
(PTL-9; 1977), 'Sleepwalkin'' by John L. Woodley & The Alwoodley Jets
(PTL-20; 1977), and one by The Sneakers, 'Link Lady' (PTL-10;
1977). The matrix number of the Steve Brown Band single, LYN-4526,
indicates that pressing was being done by Lyntone at that point. The
label design was quite ambitious for what presumably was a tiny independent;
representing the horn of an old gramophone as a flower was an inspired
touch. The Steve Brown Band came from
Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is still gigging today, albeit with several changes
in personnel. Thanks to Sam Mauger for the scan of the red label.
