PEOPLE UNITE
A musicians' co-operative; mainly
a vehicle for Reggae band Misty In Roots, though it did put out one single by
Punk band The Ruts, 'In A Rut' (RUT-1; 6/79). People Unite issued
singles infrequently from 1978 until at least 1988, sometimes in 12"
form. Initially they were numbered in the SJP-700s - a numerical series
belonging to Stuart Johnson's 'Fair Deal' studios (see 'Clubland') -
but this soon was replaced by variations on the PU-000s. Two
different label designs were used, but only one and its variants, as shown
above, appear on 7" records from the 1970s; the first scan appears by courtesy
of Nicholas Hough. The Ruts' single shown above has two matrix
numbers, SJP-795 and LYN-6202, which suggests that the recording was made by
Fair Deal studios and the pressing was done by
Lyntone. It was issued twice, the first pressing having a catalogue number
of SJP-795 and a black border around the label. The 'discography'
below only covers the '70s.
