PAGE INTERNATIONAL
Page International was the
name of Larry Page's company. Its main label was Penny Farthing
(q.v) but it made a brief appearance under its own name in late 1972 as a member
of the Philips family. Page had introduced a 'Progressive' label for
songwriters, Nepentha (q.v.), in 1971, but in May 1972 he decided to change the
name of the label to the "more mundane" Page International - 'Page
International' had been one of the names mooted for the progressive label in the
first place ('Record Retailer', 7th November 1970). The renamed label was
also intended to have a broader scope than the 'Singer / songwriter'
image of its previous incarnation ('RR', 20th May 1972).
Nepentha singles had been issued in
a 6129-000 series; Page
International picked that series up where Nepentha left
it, and continued with it briefly. According to an article in 'RR' of the 6th of May
1972 Larry Page still intended to breal the label 'in a
big way', but in the event it appears to have
issued just two singles: 'Give A Little Bit More' b/w 'The Girl
I Left Behind Me' by Sand (6129-004; 12/72) and David Matthews's, 'Lady Nicotine'
b/w 'I Wish I Was Home Again' (6129-005; 11/72). Neither are all that commonly
seen, particularly in the company sleeve. Matthews had had an LP
called 'Showcase' scheduled for release by Nepentha ('RR', 16th
January 1971) but it appears to have been cancelled.
