LUCIFER
A London-based DIY label
from 1971-73. Lucifer served as a vehicle for records by the 'band'
of that name; reports suggest that the band was actually a one-man affair, the
man in question being Denys Irving, a film-maker whose 'Lucifer Films'
evolved into 'Lucifer Records'. Four singles were issued; the 'A' and
'B' sides of the first three, at least, had different numbers. There
were also two albums, 'Big Gun' (LL-1; 1972) and 'Exit' (LL-2;
1972). The records were available by mail order only, through Oz
magazine; most copies of the second single were confiscated by the police,
presumably on grounds of aggravated naughtiness. Singles and LPs
alike are collectable nowadays. You might expect the music on them to
be Heavy Rock, but apparently it isn't. Certainly, the single shown
above is a laid-back affair, with sparse instrumentation: just bass, piano and
very basic percussion.
