INJUN
An independent label, based in Hassocks,
Surrey. Injun was owned and run by Rockabilly enthusiasts Piers
Chalmers and Trevor Engleton. Its speciality was reissues of obscure
American Rockabilly singles, and it managed more than a dozen releases during
the four years (1970-73) of its existence. Injun's first single, Joe
Poovey's, 'Ten Long Fingers', came out in 1970 without a catalogue number: the
'B.M.1.' on the label would appear to be a misprint of 'BMI', the
publisher. The label was of plain design, and was dark red with
black printing (1). Eventually this single was re-pressed; later
pressing have a catalogue number of '100' (6, 7). A slight revamp
followed: the remaining singles were numbered in the 100s, and at some point
after 101 the company name was given the dignity of being enclosed in a box
(3). The colour of the label varied,as can be seen from the examples
shown above. Later singles, from c.109, came with
black-and-silver-halved labels and a new logo (6), though at least one was
coloured black-on-blue instead of silver-on-black (7). Injun was
succeeded by the Spade label (q.v.), which continued to plough the same musical
furrow. Its singles can't have been pressed in great quantities; they are
not common nowadays. Thanks to Robert Bowes for the second and
seventh scans.
