CATHEDRAL (1)
Cathedral Recordings was initially based in Orpington,
Kent, but by the mid '70s it had moved to Eton, Berkshire. It appears
to have put its first records out in or around 1963. At first it was
dedicated to Christian songs of a devotional nature, but from the mid '60s it
concentrated on LPs of organ music by the
likes of David Partick, Nicholas Kynaston and Flor Peeters; its 'Organ Masterworks' series. The
vast majority of its 7" releases, such as the first three examples shown above, are
from the earlier decade. It did however put out at least a couple of 7" record in
the 1970s, thus earning for itself a place on this site. One was
an EP entitled 'Eton Sings' by the Pupils and
Orchestra of Eton School (CRL-1020), the picture sleeve of which states that the recording
was made in July 1976; 'Music Master' gives a release date of
October 1977, and says that distribution was by CRD - it may be that another
distributor or none handled the EP prior to that date. The other
was a nine-track EP by the Choir Of Popplewell School, Ascot,
which had a catalogue number of PS-2 and came out in 1976. An
initial intricate logo (1) seems to have been replaced by a simpler one (2)
at an early stage. There were bascially two separate numerical series used
for 7" records: CRSP-2000 for singles and and CRL-1000 for EPs. The Cathedral 7" records
that I have managed to trace are listed below. The numbers CRL 1014
to 1019 may not have been used. Thanks to John Dumencic for
discographical input.
