One of those cases where I've had to name a label after the band which had a record out on it. Pub / Club / Social outfit Basil's Balls-Up Band started out in 1974 in London and is still going today, albeit after a move to the West Country and with a much changed line-up. It appears to have made just the one record: an EP featuring a cover of 'The Darktown Strutters' Ball' and three tracks written by members of the band, 'Mean', 'Smoothy' and 'Backstreet Lovers'. There's no date on the record but guitarist Dave Briggs is listed among the musicians; his website says that he started the band in 1974 and stayed with it 'for a few years', so that appears to place the EP in the second half of the '70s. There's no catalogue number on it either, but there's a matrix number of MAC-1 in the run off; that may perhaps indicate that band member Ranald Macdonald was behind the release. As for the songs on it: 'Darktown' has slight Bonzo Dog Band overtones, while, in contrast, the others are Blues / Rock things with a funky feel. Pressing was by Pye.
